The roots of Jomaz costume jewelry go back to 1927, when Joseph and Louis Mazer founded Mazer Brothers in New York City. It was the year the New York Yankees swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series, the year Charles Lindbergh flew solo from New York City to Paris, and the year that the first "talking" motion picture, The Jazz Singer, premiered on a silver screen. And all the while, the U.S. stock market was climbing, raining endless helpings of prosperity down on the nation's Jay Gatsbys and Daisy Buchanans. Of course, despite the year's bountiful reputation a century later, most would-be flappers and sheiks could only aspire to the trappings of the swells, which is why the Mazer Brothers saw an opportunity to create fashion, or costume, jewelry that mimicked the look of real gold and platinum, sparkling diamonds and rubies. Their rhinestone and pot metal bling was a hit, and business continued relatively strong even during the 1930s, when the Mazers hired the former Cartier designer, Marcel Boucher, to design costume jewelry for them. After World War II, in 1946, Joseph Mazer went off on his own when he launched Jomaz. Despite the name change, Jomaz continued in the manner of Mazer Brothers, setting rhinestones, artificial pearls, and faux turquoise in settings of goldtone and silvertone. Though brooches in an assortment of animal and figural shapes were a specialty, Jomaz also produced bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and stunning cocktail rings. Today, collectors gravitate to the vintage, rhinestone-laden floral brooches by Jomaz, snake bangles, and pieces that make good use of enamel.
