This old crock has been in the corner of our basement for many years. I have researched this mark and I can't seem to locate a description on it anywhere. Does anyone recognize this stamp or know who the manufacturer would be? Any info that I could use to further research the item would be appreciated.
Are there any markings on the bottom? What part of the country did it come from? These marks are worse than silver makers marks to identify. Every little nook, cranny and town made crocks. Some survived most didn't.
fhr, thanks for looking. I can find no information at all on this crock. It has no other markings anywhere on it. My uncle John is 83 and he said he thinks it belonged to his aunt Anne and it has been down in the basement for as long as he can remember so I'm thinking that it may be as old as 100 years. He also said that he thinks that anything stamped with the US on it the way this is may be military related and he said that the military usually destroyed most of their surplus years ago. If that's the case then I probably won't find any history on it. I will probably end up leaving it in the basement and forgetting about it like everybody else did all those years. I just enjoy learning history on old stuff.
I can't at all agree with it being military. Perhaps scottvez will comment on that issue. There are hundreds if not thousands of crocks marked US - USA etc. The 3 on it means 3 gallons and it is a standard brown cream color. It is worth researching if you can narrow down where it originated. Never give up but look at what you have and investigate accordingly. This may very well be 100 years old but my mother is almost that old and has the same value as this crock right now on the open market. You need to seek out the mark on specialized sites for pottery, crocks, etc. I have never found a good site for makers marks but have visited some really good sites where help is available. Never say die and keep a smile.
There is lettering on the banner, can you read them or part of them?. There are many companies that used eagles as marks, I don't thing it has anything to do with the military
Thanks for the info folks. The banner is not easily readable even when magnified. My best guess is M A then some kind of small symbol that looks like an (x) only with a full circle around it, then the eagles left leg then A R. If we can't figure this one out there is more junk down there to dig up and try to identify. I saw a lot of old colored bottles and jars. Thanks for looking and thanks for the info. I retired recently and got a full time job around the house and cleaning out the basement.
Maybe it's a date in Roman numerals. See if you can get a close up photos of just the mark.
