Here is a pair of sterling silver champagne goblets which are engraved "1857 Comus 1927" on the base. I bought them from an antiques dealer in Dallas in the late 80's. She had no idea what the engraving referred to, so she sold them to me for merely the scrap silver value. I remember she weighed these items and I paid by the ounce for them.

I love Mardi Gras, and New Orleans history. I knew immediately what these were. Comus is the oldest and most prestigious krewe in Mardi Gras. It was founded in 1857. These goblets were the gift or "call outs" given by the krewe member to his date for the evening at the 1927 Comus masked ball. (I assume the krewe member kept one and gave one to his partner). They were retailed at a New Orleans jewelry store.

I love the history and romance behind this item. It is amazing they are still together almost 85 years later. I have a friend from New Orleans that keeps wanting me to leave him these goblets in my will. LOL

Note: The bases look damaged in the photos, but they are in perfect shape. It is just a reflection that makes them looked banged around.
