Here is my 1939 Donald Duck pocket watch with out the decal on the back with the original box. the box is printed W.D.Prod. Ingersoll Pocket Watch $1.25 with picture of Donald showing watch to Mickey . the watch case is near mint and the dial very clean but colors are faded.
Pretty cool that you have the box as well.
thanks for posting Mickey, I have the $1.00 box with mine, now others can compare . The color blue on the dial has faded, as you said, but not the yellow. Wonder if it's possible that that might be the correct color for the non-decal variant.very great looking example
Some early colour drawings of Donald Duck pre 1939 (eg. page 51 - Robert Heide & John Gilman) shows him wearing 'light' blue clothing very similar to this pocket watch and it got darker into navy blue in the 40s. My guess is that this watch dial has not 'faded' but is the 1st series and without case back decor. The 2nd series (with the navy blue clothing) has 2 versions, namely with and without case back decor.
Mickey's watch should have a much earlier movement number than the ones that Kerry (with decor) and I (without decor) posted recently. The movement number on mine is 95982769.
Thanks George the number on the watch with the light blue color is 4993574and the watch with the decal is 7877562
Mickey, after writing my comments above, I have found a 'light blue' Donald WITH decor for sale on eBay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/400568835397?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649. So I guess decor back versions are available to 'both' light blue & navy blue dials and not exclusive to light blue.
The movement serial numbers should have 8 digits (approx. year below) :-
1939 90,xxx,xxx
1940 92,xxx,xxx
1941 93,xxx,xxx
1942 94,xxx,xxx
1943 95,xxx,xxx
1944 96,xxx,xxx
Can you take another look perhaps you have missed a digit somewhere!
