This is a gold filled, 33mm medal made by Dieges and Clust.
Obverse has the US Navy emblem and the legend “First Naval District Athletics Medal”.
Reverse is engraved, “DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP MENS BASKET BALL 1918-19 WON BY NAVAL RADIO SCHOOL CAPT. L. G. G. E. SIMONSON.” It looks like the engraver had a bit of trouble with this one but I am fairly sure the above is what was intended. I assume that the “G.E.” before the name are the first initials but what are the initials “L.G.” after the rank “CAPT.” ? Does anyone here recognize the name or have any other medals named to this Capt.?

I just had some collectors tell me that the "Capt. L. G." probably means Team Captain, Left Guard which makes sense to me.
