In 1863, Wilhelm Steigerwald, the brother of Franz Steigerwald (of Theresienthal fame) built a crystal glass factory at Regenhütte, in the Bavarian Forest. Steigerwald at Regenhütte produced highly refined crystal glass in Neo Baroque and Rococo styles. In 1901, the glassworks at Regenhütte founded a sister company at Schliersee in Upper Bavaria. The Schliersee glassworks specialized in iridescent Art Nouveau glassware, with bold lustre and enamel colors. Glasfabrik Schliersee was only in operation for ten years, so the pieces created there are considered quite rare.*

Christiane Sellner's excellent German-language book Gläserner Jugendstil Aus Bayern (Art Nouveau Glass in Bavaria) documents the relationships between, and the products of the factories in the Bavarian forest. It includes photo examples and copies of line drawings from Regenhütte, including the Schliersee factory.

This amazing piece of glass could hold its own next to anything being made in Bohemia at the time. There is an example of a piece in this decor in the book, on a documented shape, Prod. Nr. 99, as shown in the line drawings. The form of this vase is also documented as Prod. Nr. 29/I. The glass is a deep cobalt blue, and is painted in violet and gold iridescent ink in waves of zig-zag lines in the vase body. This is one of the most satisfying pieces of glass I've gotten in recent memory. There is great attention to detail, and the design extends to the bottom of the vase.

Very much in the style of the Loetz rubin glatt DEK pieces, which you know I love.

Great information on this piece and nice research. The decoration reminds me of Loetz etching ink DEK's. After reading your research on this company, I think I have an example from either this company or Steigerwald. My vase has a different etching ink and enamel decoration but the same cobalt blue glass.

      Hi Warren,

I find a vase in identical shape as your second example on ebay. Could this also be a Schliersee? I love that the pattern mimic wood grain.
