Well I've seen alot of trunks on this site so I may as well show mine. The tray inside is missing but other than that it works pretty well for storage and it doesn't look to bad sitting at the end of the bed. It's also strong enough to sit on and look out the upstair window. I do like the red medal that wraps around it.

I wouldn't mind.... "just"... having one.
Let alone just one that looked as good as this.
Nice!!
Maker? Year? Probably have the key too Right?
Way Nice!!
Thanks For Sharing.
Thank you DMK678. No I don't know the maker or the year and it didn't come with a key. I did look inside and someone repapered it with news paper around 1931. I just bought it because I've never seen a red one before that had the medal on the outside like that. Thanks again for your nice comments.
1931. 80 years or better? And looks about as good as Day 1.
Yes the red, I almost asked if that was leather. You have great taste.
Looks beautiful.
Thanks James

Hi, a little info on your trunk. It's a style called the "cross slat" pattern which was patented by Charles Taylor of Chicago in 1880, but was made by many companies all the way through the 1910's. The metal slat clamps normally have Pat. Mar. 16, '80 stamped into them. The latches were patented in 1873 and were used for many years on trunks of this type. It's an embossed metal covered trunk, very popular in the 1890's to 1910's period and shown in many old trunk catalogs. There were a couple dozen patterns of the embossed metal that were made and they were painted in two colors to show off the pattern. The slats were made of elm according to the old trunk catalogs. Hi - beautiful trunk! I recently acquired one that has the same embossed metal covering in areas. Mine is not in very good shape when I got it. Upon cleaning the metal a little i was able to tell by the part that was protected by the lip of the lid that it also had this red coloring at one time. Unfortunately mine was in such poor condition I just steel wooled it to get the rust off and repainted it to make it look a little better. It's actually on this site too under my name - it was basically black from canvas and rust...stripped everything off and made it look different - wish I could have left it is original condition - yours is fabulous!
Thank you fearghais for stopping by and leaving the comment and the nice compliment!
