I picked this one up today and would like some feedback on maker and dating.

It is a quality piece of glass with some weight and about the size of a baseball in your hand. It is about 3" tall and the top is 2 3/4" across with the opening being about 1 3/4". The top and bottom are both smooth polished-- with considerable age showing on the bottom.

I'd think this was at least 50- 60 years old and maybe part of a desk set. I suppose this could be a paperweight/ paper clip holder combo.

    Any help is appreciated.

I am not familiar with this particular design, but the characteristics suggest Moser or a Moser-like company made this. If you do not get a more definitive identification from others on this site, I'd suggest starting your research with Moser.

BTW, the characteristics are: all over faceting / cutting, deep facets / cuts, thick-walled, beveled rim, ground bottom, color, etc.

Thanks 20th, good place to start. I suppose that would make it a little earlier than 1950s!

Very beautiful piece Scott, lovely photos as well.

Scottvez, Moser is still in operation today and continues to produce high quality work. While your piece has a definite Art Deco quality to it, until you find the exact piece and record if it's design date, it's difficult to know when a piece was made. Moser even has a few "classic" designs they re-issue from time to time as part of their honoring the past.

That said, modern issues are more reliably marked than in previous years. Acid stamps could wear away over time.

      Yep-- thanks again, 20th.

No attribution thoughts here but it does look like high quality glass. Very nice Scott! Thanks for posting. : )

Hi Scott. I have no idea but throwing out inkwell? Same size? Could it have had a lid? Trying to spark ideas.
    11. AmberRose AmberRose, 11 years ago
Of course they usually have a hinge don't they...hmmm
    12. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
Thanks amber-- I appreciate your input.

It is a little too large for an inkwell and as you noted no lid or indicators that there was one.

Looking at the bevel of the well in the glass maybe their was an inkwell insert?
      Any wear/nick marks?
    17. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
Nope to all-- it wasn't made for an inkwell insert.

This is a WMF piece made around 1930 at their Geislingen factory. It was designed by Walter Dexel (sometimes it appears written as Drexel)

These small vases are usually part of a smoking set, as cigarette holders with a matching ashtray (just like it happen with the mall Strömbergshyttan ones), although I have never seen an ashtray with this design. But I've seen five or six vases no higher than 9 cm tall, so probably they were created just as vases.

It really is a very beautiful design!!!

Thanks austro-- I appreciate the information.

Do you have any links to the items that you are describing?

Do you mean the smoking sets from Strömbergshyttan I mention? you can see a sample here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/87344-strmbergshyttan-h95-ashtray-and-cigare?in=collection-127

As for other Dexel items, here is a link to a couple of them in a german shop:

      Thanks-- I appreciate the links.

I don't see the similarity with the Strombergshyttan. The linked examples look more "modernist", while my example has more of a deco look (my wording).

While the color is close with Dexel-- the shapes seem more egg shaped than my circular example.

      I do appreciate your assistance.

Well, i just used te Strömberg stuuff to illstrate what the smoking set would look like.

Yes, there are several colours for this design... there's this light yellow, your amber and I'd swear I've seen one in blue in the past... At least there's no doubt it's a Dexel design.
    23. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
      Thanks again.

I don't believe it is Dexel-- based on the linked items.

I don't see a similar shape (round) nor do I see the same lip finish.

I'm glad someone said ashtray. I was getting worried. I have one out in the shop and that is what I thought it was. Believe me it isn't pretty but it is functional and doesn't tip over.
    27. scottvez scottvez, 11 years ago
Could be but small and no cig rests on it, so I don't believe it is an ashtray.

Popped in a couple years too late it seems. Yes I believe this is part of a smoking set. This would be the table lighter w/o the lighter insert.
