Found this Ball special number 13 canning jar when cleaning out our parents' house. It is a clear, two-quart, wide mouth jar with a zinc lid. Were told it is a special jar. Does anyone know anything about this jar?

Hi bigelow. There are a lot of good sites about Ball jars. From what I can tell about the way BALL is written, I would guess it would date between 1933-1960. You can check it against these designs. http://livinghomegrown.com/images/2012/06/Screen-shot-2012-06-03-at-7.07.01-AM.png
As for the special, that I can't say for sure. Ball has at times done commemorative/reissue designs. There are a lot of sites devoted to collectors of these jars, one of which is http://www.balljars.net/ Thanks for sharing and let us know what you find out!

I think you will find that unlucky #13 jars are more desirable to collectors because of just that, back in the day most people wouldn't use the jars marked with the mold #13 because of superstision (sp). That meant most were not used, maybe thrown away or never bought?
My grandpa was one of the largest Fruit Jar collectors in Indiana, and had thousands of very rare jars, and I will always remember him digging through boxes of jars at sales and such, for the #13.Good luck and thanks for posting!
