I believe this shape is referred to as a "Collar Box". In past days the men's shirts had detachable collars, which cut down on the need to launder the shirt as often. This item was used on the gentlemen's dressing table to hold the collars.
This item was not in great shape when I found it. The hinge was broken but even worse was a HUGE chip out of the cover. See pic # 4. I bought this for the price of a Big Mac, and thought I would try to fix it. I glued it in place and am pleasantly surprised how good it looks. The repair has held for several years. Of course this piece is used for display and not really used on a daily basis. You have to actually be looking for the repair to see it.
Wow, gorgeous
