Thornton-Pickard | Nimrod Automan No.3 | 1907/8 | Hand/Stand Camera | 1/4 Plate.
Again on the theme of Sanderson competitors:
The Nimrod Automan Series of four models was produced from 1907 to 1912 as a response to poor sales of the top-quality but over-expensive Oxford Automan, (aka Automan Oxford, 1902-1906, qv). It retained the very clever self-erecting front of the Oxford, but was a simpler and considerably lower-priced camera, introducing rack and pinion instead of lever focusing, with single-extension on the No.1, double-extension and Unicum shutter on the No.2. As far as I am able to find by research, this No. 3, still with double-extension and Unicum shutter, but with leather trim instead of leatherette, was introduced in 1907 and deleted in 1908, which may account for why I have never seen another one. The No.4 (De Luxe) version has leather trim plus swing back and choice of lens/shutter specifications.
