So far, this year I have been realy lucky finding great jewelry for next to nothing. I bought this nice mourning brooch for about 1 euro at a flea market. Judging its incredibly long extended needle, its c-claps and its tube-hinge I think it dates from around 1850. It has some minor damage: the lower 'dot' is split in half (see last picture), but for the rest its in great condition.
The four 'drops' are jet, I'm pretty sure about that. The brooch itself might be wood, painted black, but I m not sure. Its not black enough to be jet, it seems to be carved, and it doesn't feel really cold to the touch. Does anybody have an idea?
Thanks a lot!
WOW.... YOU DID GREAT.... I am amazed at the extra long needle.
IT's gorgeous.
Thanks for your nice comment and for loving my brooch DrFluffy!
Wonderful brooch, in according to the color I think it is made of Vulcanite.
Thanks for the love Freiheit and Agram.
Agram, I did a bit of research since I posted the brooch earlier, and I think it might be Bog Oak. It does have some wood-graining pattern and it seems to be carved, and as you know Vulcanite is always molded.
If that' s the case you are right of course. Have a good weekend!
Agram, thanks again for your comment. You are always a great help for me to try to find any info on my jewelry.
And a big thank you for loving my brooch to freiheit, vetraio50, Hunter, Moonstonlover, walksoftly, valentino and Amber Rose!
I just thought about something: in fact I bought this brooch from a merchand in jewelry on a flea market. She had a big pile of jewelry for one euro/piece. There were lots of beautiful antique mourning jewelry pieces on that pile. It seems nobody is interested in buying these mourning pieces anymore! Such a shame... :-(
