Found this old lamp in old house as a kid. It was a scary old basement,
Had a huge boiler and two rooms that had dirt floors. Lamp was in box
all tarnished and did not look like much. My grandpa gave me a can of brass polish, lots of rags and alone to work on cleaning it. Took hours, but it turned out nice. Loved the hunting scenes. Old lamp shade was once I think white it was soiled and had gold trim weaving. Got it cleaned up, grandpa showed me how to rewire one of many brass lamps to follow. Gave it to my father as a birthday gift with new lamp shade. He passed away in 200o and I got it back. Always wondered what the markings
on the lamp mean? Anyone know? Thank you for looking.
this is a japanese lamp from the american occupation or slightly before, the tarnish you polished off was most likely a lovely bronze patina and gilt decorations in the etchings. i cannot read the kanji markings but any dealer in japanese or eastern art could
if you are interested i just posted a pair that have not been cleaned so you can see what it would look like in original condition
chokin lamps are less common than vases and decorative plates but there are plenty around, i just got these at an estate sale last weekend
