I picked up a few dining chairs recently, which look 1880-ish -1900 to me. Since the label is still affixed to the underside of the chairs, I know the maker. However, I noted that it looks as though one label was affixed over the other and all the chairs are like this. This leaves me a little flummoxed. I'm not sure why they are like this. And though I feel like the chairs are consistent with the Victorian type style made by the Robert Mitchell Company, why would they place one label over the other?

The most logical reason for the two labels is when the name changed from Mitchell and Rammelsberg to Robert Mitchell Furniture, the new company stickers were placed over the old company stickers. If the bottom label has the old name then it gives you a date for the piece.

In anticipation of your next question, if you have both labels, one over the other then 1881.
