Every year in Portland, Indiana they have there Annual Gas Engine and Tractor event in August. The Fairground has everything, I swear you name it and it's probably there because it's a four day show, it's quite interesting. They have a beautiful round barn that's full of every collectors dream. On that one summer day I attended was this very nice spinning wheel that belong to a nice elderly couple. After we talked awhile and they told me a little history of the wheel I decided to buy it. Except for a drive band it appears to be complete and could be made functional. I was told from the turning on the legs, wheel posts and maidens, wheel is from the period 1780-1830. It is American, probably from New England. The chip carving on the ends and beading on the sides of the table are other indicators. There is a name on table J. Finkins.
Thank you cis2you.
Thanks chevy59.
The man who built my house in the 1840's was a cabinet maker and is mentioned in several local history articles as a maker of chairs and spinning wheels. Every time that I see a spinning wheel in an antique store I turn them over in hopes that someday I'll find his name on one. So far most that I have looked at had know markings at all. Nice find.
Thank you Picking-and-Collecting and I hope some day when you turn over that spinning wheel that the name your looking for is there! I think it's great your house was built in 1840's. Boy if those walls could talk.
Thank you James.

I have a wheel very similar to yours, from I believe the 1880s. Have you found someone to refurbish and/or create missing part? I would like to do this too.
Thank you dianta for stopping by. I bought it just because I loved it. Never thought about refurbishing it or having the missing part made. :-)
