With all the trunks on this site and all the information being given out, I was wondering if this trunk is a little more unique because of the size. It is alot smaller than the ones I've have seen on here. The height is 19" and the width is 22" and it's 17" deep. On the latch it shows May 11, 1875. It's not flat on top, there is a slight hump.

Thank you chevy59.
Thanks James.
Hi, nice small trunk. In the old trunk catalogs I have these small trunks were called Hat Boxes or Hat Trunks. But I'm sure some of them must have been made and used for other purposes too. The lock patent may look a little like a 6 but it is May 11, 1875, patented by Frank Mix who worked for Eagle Lock Co. in Terryville, CT at that time. I have the same lock on several of my trunks and they also have the patent date. I double checked and there was no trunk lock patent on May 11, 1876. So, I'm sure it's the right one. The two latches on your trunk were patented in 1882 and made by the Sessions trunk parts company in Bristol, CT. The other hardware matches a design I found patented by Charles Taylor in 1879, but his hardware was sold to many trunk companies. The trunk was probably made in the area where the owner lived, maybe in Providence or Boston where there were many trunk makers. These smaller trunks are harder to find than the average trunk. I have a similar one I plan to post soon. Thanks.
