I found this chair at a little thrift shop in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans about four years ago. I think it cost me about $15-20. It was painted a kelly green color (over white) and after I started sanding it down to fix some rough patches, I decided to go all the way back to raw wood. The back has a crack with a small repair, but it's mostly unnoticeable from the front.
I love the modernist shape combined with the untreated wood, and was reminded of this chair when i saw sodapoprocker's post of a similar piece a few weeks back (see it here - http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/98910-restored-mid-century-chair?in=user) Apparently they're not exactly Allan Gould's compass design, but a close imitation ~ http://piersonmodern.com/Seating/compass.html
stunning! , wow beautiful:)!
Gorgeous! Interesting that this one isn't upholstered like most others I have seen.
Yeah, I'm guessing when the upholstery broke down (years ago) someone painted it for the first time. I actually really like the gently curved seat piece.
Thanks for the loves and comments Sean and sodapoprocker!
Your very welcome Hunter!
thanks Phil and aghcollect! :)
You have had excellent chair luck! Another great one!
Thanks Amber! I know, I definitely love the orphan chairs...I have three more in storage back in TX. :/
Looks great, love it!
thanks walksoftly :)
Never seen one with a solid wood base! I've got a set and have been researching. Think they were manufactured by Fernwood....this set is attributed:

ooh, great link Damon! I'd imagine the fabric seats were simply upholstered over the wood piece? Not sure if you can peek under your upholstery to find out...the curve in the seat (to fit a human butt) is perfect though. :)
Hunter, did you see that Austro has a secret room filled with 31 found chairs? Immediately thought of you.
Long time no chat, hope you are well.
@Amber - no way! Did he post on S&T? Send me the link!!
