Hello Again,
I bought this a week ago at a shop in Buzzards Bay. I first saw it a couple of years ago, but the condition was so bad that I just couldn't do it,( I've got a house full of such things:). When I walked it up to the counter the shopkeeper tried to talk me out of buying it, but by some miracle I couldn't be swayed.
Though a mere shadow of it's original self, it's beautiful!
It must've been a case or holder for something, looks like it's made out of some type of natural material. The painting is fine, the birds are in relief.
What do you all think?
Any ideas what it may have been used for?, what it might be made out of?
Interesting anyway, isn't it?
Thanks for taking a look,
Tony.
it is very stunning Tony and very interesting!
Just a thought, but could it been part of a accordian folding fan sleeve. I'm thinking I've seen something similar, if so I would think bamboo would be the material for the inner sleeve
Thanks, Sean, for the look, love, and welcome comment,
and Thank You, Kerry, for an interesting thought.
Have a great week-end,
Tony.
Thanks for the love, Valentino!
Thanks for the look and love, Kevin
Much appreciated.
Think of you often, hope all is well,
T
I think it's part of a sword...or an eyeglass case...
I'd have caved and bought it too. Can't stand leaving things all lonely and forgotten.
Hey Tony! Hope you are well

Your very welcome Tony!
What are it's dimensions?
Can you try a hot pin on a broken edge, does it melt/burn, if smoke comes off in the test what does it smell like?
Thanks for the looks, loves, and comment, walksoftly and Manikin!
and David, I'll try the hot pin test and let you know the result, THANKS for the tip!
It does appear to be some sort of leaf. The sides look to be a type of woven grass. My guess as use would be eyeglasses case.Does it look like the base is missing?
Made of natural shell, lacquered in gold (maki-e) japanese, export, used as cherroot holder!
