This Cabinet Card is part of our Nicholson family collection. I'm posting this as an example of a photo of a drawing. I've been unable to determine who the gentleman is, but he was important enough for this branch of the family to keep it over 100 years.
It was taken by Alfred Pettitt of Keswick, Cumbria, UK (Lake District). This is the same area that the above mentioned branch of the family came from when they emigrated to Canada.

Thanks for the love on this Phil.
Good question, I hadn't thought of the signifigance of what he was holding. The letter may signify a couple of things possibly, one portrays the ability to read, the other being that it's a letter from or to a loved one.
One thing that intrigues me is why the portrait, was this an image of someone that passed away before a photo was taken of him or does it showcase the talent of an anonymous artist.

Hi walksoftly...I also noticed he is sitting on an old church pew ..I don't know if that also would be of any significances, or maybe some information could be found if it was outside a church.....:-)
    17. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
Hi Inky... Hadn't thought that the bench he was sitting on may be of importance.
You're right though it does look like a church pew. One problem with identifying the man is that we don't know who the artist is & where it may have been done. The drawing may have been sent to relatives in Keswick where it was later photographed.
