    Hi,

I found this great piece of history at an estate in Delaware.
I haven't had it rewired, but would like to clean it.........

Can oil the wooden horn part, no problem.
But it looks like someone might have varnished (!) the cast iron base and now its alligatored.

Does anyone know how to clean off this flaky residue?
I'd like to restore it to the original state, if possible.

    Thanks for looking,

    Nessa

Great find. You could strip it and repaint but it would be challenging because it would need sprayed not brushed. The patina as is looks great and you could use a clear lacquer to keep the remaining paint from peeling.

Yes, the horn is fine the way it is, just the base is painted and ugly looking.....
