This amazing vase was purchased in Sienna in 1985.
Ceramiche S. Caterina opened its first workshop in Sienna in 1949, and since 1961 the studio is owned by the sculptor Marcello Neri. Looking at the few items I’ve been able to find from Ceramiche Santa Caterina online,and those in their website, the style of Neri doesn’t really fit with this vase. According to their website, “the studio has a vast selection of designs ranging from traditional Tuscan maiolica and terracotta to works typical of the Sienese Renaissance”. What makes me think this vase was produced before 1961.
What’s really amazing about is not only its unusual shape, but the decoration and how it reminds of children’s drawings with wax crayons. It is got both a very abstract shape (which sometimes reminds me of an animal… a swan or a giraffe) and a totally abstract decoration.
It is a big vase, standing around 35 cm. tall, and it’s signed SANTA CATERINA SIENA on the base.
Very unusual. I like its shape, its the kind of thing which would catch my eye.

Well, it seems they've been at home forever :) All the Italian pottery I'm posting came directly from Italy and were bought between 1979 and 1985.

Yes, this piece is awesome! 50's Italian Ceramics are among my favorites. I also love Salvatore Meli and Lucio Fontana. Wish I could find some of these.
