Always thought this was neat. The handle is shark skin and it looks like it was a fancy sword. Looks pretty old too. The guard has a hinge in it, not sure what its purpose was though. Hope you like!

Looks like a British sword to me. Perhaps originally Naval

I agree that the overall pattern looks British, but where I would expect to find an anchor and crown seems to be an anchor and sunburst with a face? Many countries copied British patterns, and I think that’s what happened here. So, I searched the web and found this insignia that looks close:

      http://combathelmets.blogspot.com/2007/02/peruvian-model-1934-combat-helmet.html

The hinged piece was so that the sword would lay flatter against the wearer’s side when hanging from his belt.

I have seen other swords converted to candle holders, and often they were post WWI from old German swords. Although this candle holder does not look like it was made from German parts, it might date from the same era.

Guess there wasn't a demand for plow-shares then. The grip wraps were very often found in shark & ray as is coarse & gives a non-slip grip. This could be either but I'm guessing ray.

Yes it is shark skin, in case your hand got bloody in battle. I always thought that was neat about old swords in a morbid sort of way lol

The bumps on ray skin are larger, it looks like a bunch of little circles. They make wallets out of it nowadays. Its on a lot of Japanese things too, like wasabi grinders

It's gorgeous. Love the lion head, and sword look.
