very unusual recruitment ad. here is what I know it came out of the Cookeville Tenn. recruiting office in 1950 .This was hanging lit up in the office and was used when they went to schools to recruit. that's why it has a dovetail wood frame and a handle to carry it. how much older than that I don't know the recruiter took it with him when he retired and said it was their when he started. He said it had frayed wiring and they replaced it all except the very bottom light as seen in pic .The pic itself lights up and seems to be hand painted on a waxy paper on glass. when lit up the flag is red , white and blue and the men colors are of confederate and union. looks very cool lit up thanks for lookng
Hi vanskyock24, Hope you had a great Christmas and New Years! Also wishing you the best in 2014! That is definitely an unusual looking recruitment poster. It does look like a confederate soldier and a union soldier. I guess you had to pick the actual "country" you wanted to protect! I also could not help but notice the american flag and no sign of the confederate one. It just adds to the mystery. It would be intersting to know when it was made. The lights on it definitely add to it. Talk to you later, Thrifty
thanks very much thrifty we had a great holiday hope all is well for you.

I think the clothing is intended to imply civilian clothes, but I also believe the North-South undercurrent is intentional. At the end of the 19th century (and I think into the early 20th), there was still a lot of animosity about the war in the south, So much so that during the Spanish-American War, our government was careful to place well known former confederates in key military positions in order to win over southern support for the war. I believe what is implied here is that it’s time for both north and south to rally around the colors.
I am NOT saying this is Spanish American War though – That font looks like something out of the Great Gatsby!
I keep looking at the semi-civilian/semi-uniform clothes. Possibly these represent members of Confederate and Union Veteran's organizations, The UCV and GAR.
This is great vanskyock!!!

I don't see the dovetail joints but I would think the bottom bulb would be a help putting a date on this piece. I bet it looks nice lighted up.
