With most of the continent in winters cold grasp, I thought it was appropriate to post some image of how my parents & families traveled when the weather got bad.
In the first image is the team & jumper (small closed in cutter) belonging to my paternal Grandparents.
This was donated to the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin, MB by my Grandfather.
    http://ag-museum.mb.ca/
Image two is the vehicle belonging to my maternal grandparents, this was a larger version called a van. It had all the options available at the time, large 6 volt light up top for night travel, powered by a battery under the drivers bench. In the back was a wood heater to take the chill off, warm cold feet or hands or warm up a frozen sandwich. The wood was stacked under the benches, they would often pull some of the wood out to place their feet on to keep them off the cold floor. There was also lot's of blankets as well, to sit on or wrap up in.
Image three is the school vans waiting to take the rural students home from the Crandall School, Crandall, MB.
So if you have to go out in the cold today & get in your warm car with heated seats & steering wheel, navigation system, all wheel drive & a cell phone to call emergency services, don't complain too much, it could be worse. :-)

They had both types, these were better on the cold windy days like today, or if the whole family was going somewhere.
I'll do my best to stay warm, it's damn cold up here, we're trying our best to warm it up for for you though:-) xoxo

Hi Phil, I imagine they had various names around the country. We had a very short driveway so we didn't have to wait at the end of the lane for the bus. Horses made winter travel to school much easier in the early days. My first few years of school I rode in a car that picked up kids from a few families & took us to school, the little ones always sat on the laps of the older kids. I rode on a big school bus for the first time in 1969.

Wow WS, you have great family photos. You make new want to research deeper into my familys history. I love this. :-) And really.... first school bus was 1969?

Thanks for the love on these oldies & the nice compliment. I enjoy family history research, I've managed to scan some of the family photo's & documents but there are still lots to do.
Actually I stand corrected it was 1970, they closed our school at Crandall in June 1970 & bused us to a larger town.

Great pictures I love them. Kids today wouldn't believe it. Somewhere I have a picture of a team pulling a snow roller to pack the roads down for "safe" travel. These sure jog memories. Thanks much for sharing them. By the way 32 degrees here in west central Florida this morning and for us that is super cold. Back to 80 by Friday so we will just hunker down and hibernate for a day or two.
    16. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
Thanks for the love & the comments fhrjr2. Kids would have a tough time believing it & I doubt parents would let them ride in them.
I would love to see the photo's of the road snow roller.
You moved south for warm weather & then it finds you anyways, at 32 degrees are they taking measures to protect the citrus crops?

They ran sprinklers on the strawberries last night and will again tonight. No damage yet. Oranges are rapidly dying off with either cirrus canker or greening disease and the grove owners are starting to plant peach trees. We only have two orange trees left. Our grapefruit, lemon and tangerine trees had to be cut. The oranges were sweet last week but this cold snap will make them ripen even faster. Not a good year for fruit but we will have a few dozen. We squeeze them and freeze the juice mostly. I miss the lemon tree because it always produced hundreds of lemons. Not the little smooth skin ones the big ones for making lemonade. You could freeze that juice into ice cube trays and use the juice to flavor fish etc. all year. The entire neighborhood always had lemons.

The only way to travel...wish was still the way...fabulous photo walksoftly....:-)
    19. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
@fhrjr Did you lose your trees to the same diseases?
It's to bad the growers are finding it difficult with temp. & disease problems, there is nothing worse then watching a crop develop & then lose all it in a blink of an eye.

Thanks for the love Inky & the nice comments.
I talked to my mother yesterday before I posted these & she had numerous stories to tell me of her travels in them.

It's a little chilly in S. Cali... I think we are at a record 62 by the cost. I am freezing.
    23. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
Thanks for the love on these DrFluffy, it doesn't matter where you live if it gets colder than you're use to it isn't pleasant. Time to put away the cold drinks & get out the hot chocolate!

Looks like a good way to get around in the snow. My car can handle about a foot of snow but it gets pretty scary. How deep of snow could those horses handle?
    26. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
Thanks for the love & the comment fortapache, pulling that light load they could easily pull it through a foot of snow. The problem for this form of travel especially the taller van style was tipping over in snow banks

It was fun till someone got burnt on the wood stove!
    30. Aimathena Aimathena, 11 years ago
Being burnt doesn't sound like too much fun LoL
    31. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
My mother said the tipping was sometimes assisted by the big boys. When it started to lean they would quickly move to the low side. Boys haven't changed much! :-)
    32. Aimathena Aimathena, 11 years ago
I probably would have too tehehe
    33. Aimathena Aimathena, 11 years ago
I'm a lil aggressive that way. my sister in law aka bff and I were go cart racing, she tried to pass and ended up sideways LoL mwuahahaha
    34. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
      Me too :-)
One time after the van had tipped over, one little guy walked around on the side wall & left a trail of muddy foot prints that were never cleaned off.
    35. walksoftly walksoftly, 11 years ago
She probably didn't try that again!
    36. Aimathena Aimathena, 11 years ago
