This is an unusual political campaign related ambrotype.

The sixth plate features two boys seated. The one on the left holds a small booklet with a picture of James Buchanan on the cover!

Buchanan was a Democrat and elected in 1856. He served from 1857 until 1861. The last few months of his presidency saw the establishment of Confederate States of America and secession of several Southern States.

I have researched but have been unable to find this exact booklet. The cover of the booklet features a typical pose of Buchanan and the top has the word "Democratic". I don't know if the booklet was part of his campaign materials or just a biography.

Any help to find this particular booklet is appreciated.

Your photo collection is beautiful. I particularly love this one with the booklet in it because it's like a piece of history within a piece of history.

I owned this until this past year when I sold it to a friend. The boy is holding an 1856 Buchanan campaign biography. I am curious as to how you have a copy of my image? Thanks

I owned it until JUL of last year!

I think I must have bought it from you a Civil War show, maybe the Richmond show?
    19. scottvez scottvez, 9 years ago
Yep-- I sold it at Richmond. I'll be there for the show next weekend.

Look me up if you make it to the show-- I'll be in the same area.

Scott, will do. When I saw the image I thought it had been taken off my website. But you had it first! Hope to see you in Richmond! Best, Curtis

      Are these Buchanan's twins maybe?
    22. scottvez scottvez, 9 years ago
Buchanan's twins?? Wasn't aware that he fathered any children.

Believe he was a life long bachelor.

No, never had children....just some kids with a campaign bio.
