I love old and antique trunks and they are so interesting, beautiful and useful! I have collected trunks for 30 years now and this one is currently in my collection and one of my favorites. It's an Excelsior Patent trunk which was first patented in 1868 because of the new idea to completely cover a trunk with wooden strips. This trunk has latches and a brass lock from the mid 1880's, so was probaby made from about 1885 to 1890. The wood is all oak on the outside and thick pine on the inside. The patent date is stamped into the wood on front in two places because they wanted people to know that the design had been patented. The inside originally had paper lining but it was in bad shape so I removed it to show the beautiful wood. These victorian slat trunks are one of my favorite styles and I also really like the early Jenny Lind style trunks.
I too love these old trunks, I have a few up in the attic to store clothes and blankets. Could you show us or link to a Jenny Lind style trunk?
Hi, I am going to post pictures of a Jenny Lind trunk from my collection, so check back. I'm not sure if I can do a link on here. Thanks.
Link to show Jenny Lind and other style trunks.

Your "Excelsior Patent trunk" is the best I am seen. The restoration is wonderful. Thank you for the details about your trunk it helps people like myself see the difference in the workmanship of the many different trunk styles, and the person who gives it new life.
Beautiful
Thanks for the kind comments, passion4trunks. Sorry this is so late. I didn't get around to checking comments on some of these for a long time!
