This is a Japanese silk embroidery which came from my dad's Grandmother, I believe. I don't have any other details but wondered if anybody could help out with the marking from the back of it

This embroidery doesn't look at all Japanese to me. I"m guessing it's a white egret, or perhaps a heron, among bulrushes.
I agree with apostata - the script is either Hindi or Nepali, as the two scripts are very similar. (The odds are probably heavily on the Hindi side.)
Just for fun, I had a go at trying to "write" it into Google Translate based on your 2nd photograph. If it's Hindi, then GT thinks the last part might mean "I have given you". If it's Nepali, then GT thinks it may begin with "Let those people listen" or "Listen to Tilok Chand". OF course, I can't write either language, so I probably made lots of mistakes!
In your position, I would be tempted to post the photo to the Hindi subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Hindi/) and ask if it is indeed written in Hindi, and if so, whether someone might kindly translate it for you.
