Pattern 1876 Bayonet and brass Martini-Henry muzzle cover

Here are a few shots of the bayonet from my previous post. It’s a standard British pattern 1876 socket bayonet for the Martini-Henry. You’ll notice in the last picture that the Martini-Henry also has a lug at the side for a sword bayonet. I understand those were issued to NCOs and some specialist troops. The socket bayonet here has a triangular, fullered, 22 inch (55.88 cm) blade, (about four inches longer that the old 1853 Enfield) and the base of the top side has the usual British markings – the War Department acceptance stamp, inspector’s mark, and issue date of 1882. The other two sides of the base of the blade have what I believe is Hindi script.

The scabbard also has the British markings of the War Department “broad arrow” acceptance stamp and individual inspector’s mark, along with more presumed Hindi script.

These, along with the brass muzzle cover, came out of that arsenal in Nepal I keep mentioning. The muzzle cover is unmarked and has a hole in the end that a cleaning rod fits nicely into.
