This is a Rolleicord IV I restored. All it really needed was some dye in a few spots and shutter work. Slow speeds caused sticking, but once I cleaned it out and lubricated it, it worked perfectly. Great camera to work on.

Rollei cameras were solid workhorses and (sadly) greatly underappreciated today and by those who never worked medium format photography. The waist level finder created images with a unique point of view.

I love waist level finders. It's a bit more challenging to compose something backwards. Takes a little more thinking. While a prism for my Hasselblads is tempting, waist levels are so much fun.

Sean, you're right on the money. That's the one I sniped from ya. ;)

Phil, in all honesty, you really can't go wrong with most Rolleiflex models. Personally, I'm a fan of the earlier Automat models, as they're fairly easy to find requiring some work. He's safe as long as he knows how to operate one and listen to the shutter at one second. If the shutter's slow, he should avoid it, but that's music to my ears.

I'd totally believe that too. There's so many, and value varies so much between models, sometimes despite only small differences. Sometimes, the difference between a $600 camera and a $1200 camera can be a difference in the cover of the meter. They're a lot of fun to work on and shoot, and because of what I do, I get to shoot a new one every week or so.
