I came across this item from an estate sale a while back. It belonged to the gentleman's great, great, great, great grandfather. I just thought it was neat until someone saw it our our house (conversation piece) and said that it could be very valuable. I took it to a professor and he said it very well could be. It measures 7 13/16 in tall, is hand painted, no signatures or anything I could find. I can rub my finger across it and feel the paint... Parts of it seem to covered in gold. Please help me out in trying to figure out what I have. Thanks in advance!

What you have here is a piece of Satsuma ware, so named after the Satsuma Clan of Japan who were the instigators of this type of ware. The raised portions you feel are known as Moriage where a thick portion of coloured porcelain is applied giving you a beaded effect. This piece if unmarked may be modern but it also may date to around 1870 to 1880 just before the Meiji period. A lovely piece
