I do love a mystery. This Art Nouveau era ceramic vase in decidedly Southern French reflet métallique glaze style carries a very distinctive chop-like mark on the side and markings underneath, but so far has eluded my attempts at attribution. The symbolist design motif appears to be blackberry brambles rendered in green, red and blue with highlights running the gamut of colors depending upon the viewing angle.

It is clear from the execution and design that this piece was rendered by someone with artistic skill and expertise. I've talked with a few deep knowledge ceramic collectors, and some think that it might be northern coastal Italian borrowing from the French wares of ceramists in Got Barbat and surrounding environs. The influence of Massier et al. is clear in this piece, so the regional hypothesis appears to hold water. I just can't believe, however, that a piece with such a distinctive artist/chop-mark isn't documented or attributed somewhere. I'd love to know who made this piece.

    Dimensions: 8" (height) x 4.25" (width).
