Today’s postcard from the Septimus Miller Collection is one from their stay in England. The cards were a visual record of the round the world trip of Septimus and Clara Miller in 1906. Unfortunately the cards I have are unused (except for two) and provide no personal record of the moment.
In a way they are like snapshots.

Why did Septimus or Clara choose this card?

This is a JaJa card from the Heraldic Series printed and designed in Great Britain. The Heraldic Series cards were issued by Stoddart & Co, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England.

The company opened in 1905 but ceased publishing postcards by 1917.

Their specialty was heraldic postcards using the trade mark Ja-Ja.
They issued both plain heraldic postcards like this one, as well as city views with a small coat of arms.

Septimus and his wife were part of the horse racing community here in Australia. Melbourne establishment. Septimus headed the Victorian Racing Club for many years. His father Henry was known as “Money” Miller and was one of the richest men in Australia of his time.

I suppose one important link in this postcard are the three horseshoes.

Septimus, Marmaduke Huby and the Cistercians were horse breeders!

The Abbey was the site of a Cistercian monastery from 1132 and is the largest monastic ruin in Britain. The work of the monastic estate included not only farming, but mining lead, working iron, quarrying stones and breeding horses. By the middle of the 13th century the abbey was one of England's richest religious houses. Fountains Abbey remained of considerable importance in the Cistercian Order. The abbots sat in Parliament and the abbacy of Marmaduke Huby (1495-1526) marked a period of revival .... Fountains once again flourished, but its life was brought to an abrupt end in 1539 by Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.

In 1987, Fountains Abbey was awarded World Heritage status.

Heraldic Shield of the three horseshoes: an emblem of Abbot Marmaduke Huby of Fountains and the motto “Benedicite Fontes Domino”. Below a photographic image of the East Side of Fountains Abbey beside the River Skell.

    Postcard unused.
Small edge wear, printed and gilded
    Circa: 1906
    Condition: Unused
Publisher: Stoddart & Co, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England
Divided back type 6 : Brown print on reverse, text on left with logo.

    Some detail:
The Latin motto "Benedicite Fontes Domino" means "O all ye springs, bless ye the Lord". It comes from the Prayer of Azariah 1:54-64 (The Latin Vulgate w/ Apocrypha).
