This Donald Duck wristwatch, powered by a simple Swiss movement, appears to be by Ward W. Co. They have in 1953/1954 produced Donald Duck pocket watches with exactly the same dial graphics and hands. I have however never seen a wristwatch version being mentioned in books, advertising or through online research. Any further information on this timepiece will be very much appreciated.

Both kerry10456 and Mickeysmagic have posted the pocket watch version on CW and here are the links for comparison:

    Kerry - http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/111989-ward-donald-duck-pocket-watch

    Mickey - http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/94665-donald-duck-pocket-watch

Note : Fellow member Crazycharacter did some research on old adverts and can confirm that this watches fist appeared in 1937.

      George,

Great watch! Very hard to find! I think I may have an ad for this. I will try to check my papers this week for you.

Thanks Adam! Just wondering if it is by Ward, circa 1955 ish?

      George,

I believe they were done by Bayard.
    16. geo26e geo26e, 11 years ago
Adam, Kerry also mentioned that it could be Baynard. Funny it shares the same identical dial with Ward. Thanks for looking into this and will be great id you can find the ad.
    17. crazycharacter, 11 years ago
      George,

I believe Bayard originally produced the pocket watch, wrist watch & clock. Production then went over to Ward on the pocket watches. The wristwatches seem to be discontinued and Bayard kept making the alarm clocks.

This is all from memory. I will know for sure when I can find my notes. It's just a matter of finding them. :-)

You can delete this after you read it, if you want. If I am not remembering correctly, I don't want to confuse anyone later on.

I will email you as soon as I can find my information.

      Adam

      George,

Forgot it was a holiday weekend! Still looking for information for you. I can tell you one thing, that I know for sure. These are from the 30's and not the 50's.

      Adam
    21. geo26e geo26e, 11 years ago
Adam, that's very interesting! From looking at the watch case construction, it is very similar to the 50's Bugs Bunny and some examples of Babe Ruth. I have come across quite a few 30's Ingersoll Donalds but this is the only example I have seen so far. Hope we can get to the bottom of this mystery and thanks for looking into it!
    22. crazycharacter, 11 years ago
      George,

They are tough to find. They seemed to pop up more in the late 80's and 90's and then disappeared. Probably in private collections. There were 2 Swiss made Donald watches and the matching Pocket watch, well before the alarm clocks.

They were not licensed by Ingersoll, but kind of stole the hour and minute hand design from them.

I have mine displayed next to the "bearded" Mickey. They compliment each other nicely!

Adam, I only started collecting character pieces about 3 years ago so missed out on the goodies available in the 80s & 90s! lol Well, they didn't have eBay or internet then and USA is many miles away! lol

George.... hands on my PW same...red stripe...1937 :-)
    29. geo26e geo26e, 10 years ago
Kerry, yellow stripes are later ?
    30. crazycharacter, 10 years ago
I'm thinking there has to be some way to date these by the paint scheme. Just trying to figure it all out will be the problem. So many little variations. Some have the yellow feather too with red stripes or white.

It does appear the earliest are red and don't seem to have any movement markings.

If someone bought the "original" creator out, they could have gotten all of the left over inventory and there could be mix match pieces which will make it even more confusing.

Anyway.....back to looking at ads.....my eyeballs are going crazy....good thing I have whiskey.

      :-)
    31. geo26e geo26e, 10 years ago
Would help if Ward W Co. Ads are available for comparison, as long as they are not in black and white!
    32. crazycharacter, 10 years ago
It's possible I have more. Will email them to both of you if/when I find them.

I've seen some that I believe are thrown together using misc. parts too. I started to wonder if someone didn't find a huge stash of the dials and hands somewhere, like the Red Ryder watches.

It would be easier for someone to use and find parts from the 50's and 60's than the 30's.

Who knows.....hopefully we can get it all sorted!
    33. kerry10456 kerry10456, 10 years ago
The Ward's have flag difference too, lol. Thanks Adam for locating the UK advert.... I was telling George, I thought these might have been a joint effort of Ingersoll LTD and Bayard, still have strong feeling towards that notion.
    34. crazycharacter, 10 years ago
      Anything is possible.

I thought that the ad made it sound like Louis Newmark was the creator.

"obtained from all good stores or DIRECT from Louis Newmark"

I've been doing a little research on Newmark:

Newmark was established in Britain in 1875 as an importer of Swiss watches. In 1947, with government backing, they began setting up a watchmaking factory in Croydon. Tooling for a simple Roskopf-type movement was imported from Switzerland and production commenced in 1950. All components not made at Croyden were bought in from other manufacturers in England. From 1960, they ceased manufacturing and reverted to the importing and servicing of Swiss watches.

It's also possible that all of these went through Newmarks hands as the main distributor/importer....even up to the 60's/70's

It's going to take some sleuthing!
    35. kerry10456 kerry10456, 10 years ago
Well as a side note... if either of these were 1947 or later...movement would have been marked "Foreign" as per English mfg. labor rights. Anything related to watches produced in UK prior to WW2 than wasn't mfg. in UK was stamped as such

I managed to pick up one of the wrist watches in an eBay auction (I probably overpaid, but couldn't resist...). When I ran across the eBay item, I was already aware of the Collectors Weekly posting about the 1937 pocket watch and the difference in the color of the hands with the later Wards watch and of course the similarity to the Bayard clock. The Collectors weekly listing led me to the listing for the wrist watch. In doing some online research I also found a blog post from 2011 called Disneyville that I wanted to share. It included the ad, with information that it appeared in the bottom rim of the back cover of Britain's Mickey Mouse Weekly no. 96 (dated Dec. 4th, 1937). Here's a link to the blog post...
