You would think the decoration on these lamps would be late in the heyday of Clarke's fairy lamps. But, in fact, they are some of the earliest designs. The first two examples were models 4 and 5 in fairy size. There are also models 4a and 5a which are the smaller pyramid size. They were illustrated in a 1887 advertisement alongside the English Robin design that is so often attributed to Hartmann & Dieterichs.
The unusual feature is that the decoration appears to be a "transfer" design or perhaps a "stencil" design. It is not hand painted. The decoration has slight texture and is a permanent application, as opposed to a decoration that wears easily.
The two on the right are of a similar technique but a "bramble" design. I do not have a model number for them. They are pyramid size resting on a matching pair of porcelain stands.
I would like to know how these designs were applied in the 1880s.
