This is an ancient device that made civilization civil. And made the dishonest learn to be civil, or die trying. It was developed in Egypt well over 2,000 years ago. The Romans took this device and used metal to replace some of the wooden parts. Metal specimens of this device have also been found in archaeological digs in Pompeii.

BINGO!!!! I had a hunch you knew what this was Sara! Yes this is a wooden tumbler lock. It was re-engineered by the Romans with metal parts to replace the wooden tumblers. And revolutionized civilization. =)

I hate to say I love this because it cost me $10. I had no idea what it was. When I saw the answer I went to visit a buddy. Like me he is retired, but he is a retired locksmith. I bet him $10 I had a picture of something he couldn't identify. Well...long story short he had two different ones in his garage under sheets in his collection. I think he lives off me because every time I get an old lock I bet him he can't open it and I have lost more than I have won. I thought I had him with this but that didn't work out in my favor. He is headed north for the summer shortly, maybe I will find something to stump him before his return.
Hello fhrjr2, Great story & a coincidence too. This is left to me by my late Uncle. He is retired 22 years Air Force Base Locksmith, and retired 30 years Civil Services also as Locksmith. I too would try to joggle his mind by bringing all sorts of antique locks & vaults. But this wooden tumbler lock has always been my favorite. Always a joy when you stop by and share memories of back in the day. Many many thanks sir! =)
