The Millers were in Yorkshire, England in 1906. In this card we return to Bolton Abbey. I have some photos of Septimus and Clara Miller clad in high Victorian gear and wonder how they would deal with the idea of crossing over the river Wharfe at this point to get to the Priory. I can imagine them tentatively moving forward, intent on getting to the next stone and finally to the other side of the crossing. There are 57 stepping stones that link the hamlet of Storiths with the Priory. Fortunately there is also a bridge to allow the less sure footed to cross safely these days.
But there is also that view of the waterfall opposite the Priory site!
"Turner made a number of visits to the Bolton Abbey Estate and produced a series of watercolours of the ruins of the 12th century Priory and nearby sites, including The Strid, Barden Tower and Addingham Mill. In fact the area made a lasting impression on Turner. Ruskin, the influential 19th century English art critic and social thinker, said that no matter what Turner painted in later life, he was always influenced by the memories of "the chanting waves of the Wharfe."
