As I have mentioned before these new PC's of mine were collected by Clara and Septimus Miller in 1906. The Millers were wealthy Australians on a world tour. Septimus and Clara had an interest in horse racing and in JMW Turner. Quite a few of their cards were collected of spots painted by the great artist. Turner painted two oil paintings of Plumpton Rocks following his first visit to Yorkshire in 1797. There are also drawings of this spot held by the Tate.

    Plumpton Rocks
Plumpton, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, HG5 8NA
    Map reference: SE355536

Plumpton Rocks os a large picturesque garden formed in the 1760s by creating a lake at the foot of an extensive range of weathered and contorted gritstone outcrops. The man-made lake and surrounding pleasure gardens were designed by Daniel Lascelles and the lake was extended by a dam built by John Carr. J.M.W. Turner was commissioned by Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood to produce two paintings of the lake and rocks. These now hang in the Saloon at Harewood House. These were in fact his first commissioned landscapes in oils.

He charged the Earl a little more than £32 for the pair. Although this was still quite a large sum (the equivalent of a few months' wages for a labourer), within a few years Turner was so successful, he could charge twenty times that amount.

The rocks were also notably painted by Thomas Girtin.

The area is currently operated as a tourist attraction by the owner Robert de Plumpton Hunter. The reason for the 'u' in the current name for the rocks is unknown - Turner referred to it as Plompton Rocks, in keeping with the name of the parish itself.

This card was published as part of the Valentines Series No. 2692.

So totally correct about the similarities SEAN. But I bet the lake in Wisconsin is natural. These English lords had a taste for re-engineering nature.

Glad to hear the weather passed but from what I just seen on the TV Katoomba sure did cope it, I hope the inner city is faring better. At the moment it's finely dry here well it's not raining it will do that when I go into town later.

Better then raining all day at least you can get out & about. There is no need for me to complain as I just love the scenery we get because of the rain. When I was in Chinchilla I never seen rain for about 9 years now that we have left it seems to rain all the time & floods. I still prefer it here.
