These beauties made for a very quick stop at Salvation Army this morning. I spied them on the top shelf before I even got through the second set of doors. They always put the better items and vases on top. Probably to keep them from being broken by little kids. The 8 1/2" vases are not marked with the circle and cross mark that Japanese Satsuma has so they could be Chinese in the Satsuma style. There are the raised numbers 11 and 12 on the bottom though. No matter they are still very pretty and a pair is really nice. They have a bird and floral motif with lots of raised gold enamel detail known as "moriage". The panels are identical on both sides of each vase divided by a floral band. So I think they are transfer printed and then hand colored. I balked a bit at the price but it wasn't too bad. -Mike-
