This little chap I think is carved from lignum vitae , he is very heavy for his size which is 12" , he was another tip find , probably thrown because of his broken toes on one foot , he looked so good I had to buy him £1... reading up on lignum v. I think he must have came from around jamaica area where these trees grow , also must be quite old as the trees are protected now, he has a lovely smell to him poss the wood maybe whatever they polished it with. I have seen carvings similar whilst on holiday in the canaries and the med but none were like this for weight , I think they were african and and a different wood ..I know nothing about these carvings at all so any info will be greatfully recieved..
Beautiful!!
Thanx sean..
How unusual. I'd have him for £1 too, broken or not:)
No idea what the wood is, but CW member fhrjr2 is very good on wood & helped me out a few times, like with this guy..

Maybe with measurements and weights you could determine if it is lignum vitae?
Don't even get me involved in this debate. If it is lignum vitae it isn't hard to tell.
Ha!! Im prretty sure its lignum vitae, I used to work in a joinery shop and learnt most of the woods there , not that we used it ever but had a sample board with lignum on it !! I had to check it on the web and asked a couple of wood turners ..
I have just bought 5 more African wood heads & think two of them may be lignum too ill list them soon ..
Thanks for the link and hour intrest ;-) sd
