I found this at an antiques fair and have never seen anything like it. I think it may be European depression glass. It's 10" high with a polished pontil. A really beautiful piece.

I once saw something in a similar design, a split candy dish. As I recall, it had a label that said some crystal made in Germany. Sorry I can't recall the name!
    5. Susied, 11 years ago
I assumed it was pressed glass but it could definitely be crystal. It's certainly heavy enough. Thanks for the clues.

Josef Inwald, Czechoslovakia, from the "Sphinx" service, designed by Rudolf Schrötter, and made at Inwald's Rudolfova works. Possibly decorated off-works. It is pressed glass.

      What a find!!! Gorgeous.
    8. Susied, 9 years ago
Thank you, verretcheque! I've been regularly searching and had been unsuccessful so I'm beyond thrilled for your information!

verretcheque - Where did you find this information? Do you know of a glass guide or resource website? I'd like to get more background info on the piece. Thanks again for posting!

Indeed, it's gorgeous (read "I'm jealous"). There are many, many resources out there to learn about different glassware in general, and particular makers and patterns.
CW itself has a wealth of information. http://www.collectorsweekly.com/glassware/carnival-glass
If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, there are some other places to visit. One click leads to another site, and another site etc. I love reading about pieces I've collected. Anyway, I'm writing a novel here.
      Have fun.

I believe CW members such as sklo42, and AGalwithGlass could advise on a book dealing with Schrötter, Rudolfova, and Czech pressed glass.
    13. Gillian, 9 years ago
Me again. I really don't want to mislead you - so.....it's a very good plan to do a google search on the specific name(s) that verretcheque has passed along. Also czech pressed glass, CW has some info too.
      Thanks for reading.
    14. Gillian, 9 years ago
Oh my - I should have waited for verretcheque to reply. His/her help is really all you need. My apologies.

      No problem, Gillian.

verretcheque - Merci! You are very gracious.

@12 I read your message, verretcheque. Unfortunately I have only two books on Czech pressed glass, one is yours and the other I wouldn't recommend. And nothing on individual designers or factories. Pardon!
    19. Susied, 9 years ago
Thank you all for your insight and kind (& entertaining) comments. These are great resources, even if few, and leading me down a new path for collecting. I love this glass!
Verretcheque - what is your book and is it available in English?!
    20. verretcheque verretcheque, 9 years ago

      English language.

Argentina glass fabirc export lots of this sphinx motif of Inwald, most of all in a soft carnival decor or in pink. I have several. Also I have seen newer ones in blue and gold.

      here some literature in English

      http://www.carnivalglassworldwide.com/decorama.html
    23. sklo42 sklo42, 9 years ago
@19, Susied, the book is in English, it comes with a disc of factory catalogues, and I found it's photographs and information invaluable. Obviously no one book could be exhaustive.

here is all the information, probably done in my country Argentina the pattern is Decorama
    26. Susied, 9 years ago
Kivatinitz - It's probably the Czech version based on the shape and color but definitely Decorama. What I can't figure out is the color combo which is not irridescent.
