I found this today at the Goodwill. People complaining about the rising prices, but this was a steal for two dollars. Blue and white stoneware piece likely pre 1900?? Interesting chain link type pattern and scallops on the bottom. No major cracks or breaks, some chips. No readable marking. A good solid piece. 3 inches tall, diameter is 6 1/4. I would say it is a fruit or berry dish, maybe for cereal.
It is a shame because the previous visit to the GW I missed a good milk crock. It had no glaze on the outside, only on the inside. I was soooo close to snagging it but I lost focus, most likely from the same collection as this piece. 1 out of 2 is better than not playing. Enjoy!

Don't think they sold many cereal packets in the 1800's but maybe they did in America? I'm not sure of your culture during that century...
I think it's more likely a kitchen utility bowl. Made for mixing things in.. Whisking eggs..grinding bread crumbs...maybe even to hold a pot plant...no, doesn't have a hole in the base..
Really hard to date and attribute stoneware like this but I love kitchen gear in Oxford colours.
It's got a great glaze, oxford colours, some nice patterns with spills and vertical stripes and then a lovely lace, drapes all over the place, flower s etc...we used bowls like this in our family when I was growing up for dripping storage or making Christmas puddings in. But I doubt your beautiful bowl was used for heating anything.....

You are right. It's the third smallest in a set of nesting bowls. Most likely used as utility. The style is rings-around or wedding rings. Hard to date yes. I was guessing no later than 1920.

Knew it was a mixing bowl sorry late to the party. Oddly I have been wondering about old mixing bowls, as I think my education there is sadly lacking. Wondering what I am passing by...
annelanders, I have a reference book on blue and white stoneware. Last night, as I wrote the post I was kind of making an educated guess using what was in the book. This morning, after I saw your comment, I went back to the book. And what do you know, there it was. I must have missed it. But it turns out to be the exact one in the book.
