New to collecting, I am looking for a time frame for this doll. She has a baby's elongated forehead with brownish red hair, came with names written on her from AZ. 3 l/2 inches. markings are rubbed off with wear.
I would be very grateful for a range of dates. Thank you.

Poor little thing with writing all over her. She is around the 20's or 30's. Beyond the writing that has nothing to do with the doll, is there a mark on it's back?

I should have a high magnifier in the mail tomorrow. on the back over where the marks should be is written "not a nitwit" in old script. She is a mystery. on her chest are the names "sybil clyde", on her head is "rugen". There are many rugen names from germany, so one guess is she is german. Thank you for the guess.

The script is not a manufactor mark though, someone wrote on her for some reason. It would have been the mold mark. It's either made in Germany or Japan. I would guess Japan

with five times magnification I can not be totally certain because her back is so worn, but it looks like Japan. Were these kind of dolls with pinned arms and legs widely available?
    5. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 14 years ago
Yes they were. Those marked Japan are easy to find. I call them mini bisque's. The ones without the movable arms are frozen Charlotte's.

Thank you again. One more question, Please? Would you imagine these small dolls would have been bought by families without much money?

I would venture to guess that might be the case. They were a big import in the 20 & 30's and easier to optain than the more expensive German dolls because they were mass produced. That is really what keeps the value down on them today, there are more of them. And of course the quality. I have lots of these little dolls, I love them.

I'm trying to find a small doll that was sold in the local dime store when I was a kid (late 50s). These dolls cost 25 cents for a large doll (about 3" long) or a dime for a small doll (approximately 2" long). These dolls were bisque (or porcelain); not sure which, but they were breakable (hence, NOT plastic or cloth). They were dressed only in a small triangular piece of flannel (a diaper) and held with a very small gold safety pin. As best as I can remember, arms and legs were movable, held with an elastic string. The head and body of the doll were one solid piece. I'd love to find one of these if anyone could point me in the right direction. Regards, Elizabeth M
