That's a lot of work. Looks great.
Very similar to my grandma's. Nice memory.

Very nice work on the restoration -- gives me hope to see a metal covered trunk reworked like that. What did you use as a final coat to finish it?

Thank you, I hand sanded on it for weeks including the wood. I then stained the wood. While i was staining the wood I accidently got it on a metal piece on the side and liked it. So I ended up putting the stain on all of the hardware then applied rustolium laquer over the whole trunk. The rust is still there but now has a new look!!

Just goes to show what some hard work can do. I thought this trunk was basically "unredeemable" and I usually stay away from metal covered trunks for this reason. Kudos to you and a lesson learned for me -- you TOTALLY brought this back to life! Now out to buy some rustolium....

Thank you mr trunkman. It was your response from my first post that got me in gear. I can now use this in my daughters western wedding and put the real loot....the gifts in it!!!!

The clear coated rusty patina look is a cool finish.Having done this many times myself using clear varathane i can appreciate the hard work. Just know that over time the rust will come through the clear finish( rust never sleeps). I find that multiple coats slows this process to some degree. Nice job and well done.

Thanks everyone!! I have never tried to refinish anything in my life before this..I am pretty proud of myself. Now to tackle the inside and get rid of that yucky mothball smell out of it!!
