Bought it in Japan, about 20 years ago, but I think it it Chinese. I believe the dragon is made from ivory. It has 5 segments which you can pull apart. So maybe for tobacco or medicine. The red lacquer has a beautiful black and gold dragon with the tail finishing on the other side.
It is just a beautiful piece would love to know exactly what it could have been used for.

justjeff2, a really wonderful, complete inro. Here is comprehensive information on Japanese inros and netsukes from the Victoria and Albert Museum:

      http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/n/netsuke-inro/

And some extraordinary inros with detailed descriptions, from the V & A:

awfull nervous here , because i am not skilled enough and the stakes are awfully high
i am not an expert , and i talk rubbish all the time and you need an expert ( and an awfull good one)

this a 4 case inro ( not a 5 case inro) just semantics

the first question is it the right stuff for an inro , with other words are we going to be railroded in a so called sakura - bark , no we aint

IMO we are in an takamaki e inro combined with an hiramaki-e technik and for the contrast dark sumi and kirigane

we can,t judge nashiji , because you did,not provide the photo

how about the netsuke , well i am blatantly ignorant ( i am Dutch!)i always mix them up (kara ) SHIShi , KIrin Komainu variation < IMO opinion it is just a Shishi

It is celluloid or raisen , don,t know no skill ( and very bad eyes, looks good

IMO the question is why is the sumi so light, i guess , it could be transitional EDO sumiis darker , so maybe it could be something like 1870

i could state complete bullshit , but i have digged VERY DEEP, even when it is a complete fake it is value , and you need a REAL ! good expert , because the stakes are VERY HIGH !
