This is one of a set of chairs that is a family heirloom. The "back" story is that it came from Scotland. "The Stephens Shipyard was (and might still be) on the River Clyde in Scotland. They built luxury vessels, and the woodwork was superb. When the outfitting department was between projects, Stephens would have his finish carpenters make furniture for him, his family and others. One member of the family immigrated to San Francisco in the latter part of the 19th century and brought these chairs with him. They have come down through the family to the present day."
I'm curious what kind of value these chairs may have.
It's beautiful. Unfortunately Phil is right about value, especially early Victorian is not the trend right now. It's all mid century modern these days.
Mid century may be in "now" but good quality never goes out of style. Take care of your Scottish chair....they don't make that stuff any more.
High quality this.
don't you DARE change the color! :-)
Thanks for all the thoughts. The family that actually owns the chairs has decided they want to keep them, so they will not be sold. And likely the color will not be changed, since the upholstery is in decent shape. It is not the original upholstery -- this color happened to co-ordinate well with our bedroom decor, so we liked it. But generally, I can imagine it is not a sought after color :)!
