Found at father in laws house, no idea what it is, very detailed. Marking xeuj ? On bottom. Looks hand made, wife loves it, thinks it was in her grandmothers house.

All pictures are in 3d not flat.

What a gorgeous vase ! Hopefully one of our Asian collectors can ID it for you with added photo's . It sure has age to it . The carp was used by Japan and China as a symbol but I lean to it being Japanese .

I have been looking at this a little closer, all of the decorations (flowers, fishing line etc) are in 3D meaning i can feel the design, it is not smooth like it was drizzled on with a thick paint. I never saw anything like it, still not sure what it is. I tried a better pic of mark but it does not come out well. to me it looks like X U E J N the E looks like Kanji mark for mountain but cannot find any other info its 12" tall and 5" square, any more help would be appreciated.
      Thanks

I think what is barely readable is "MADE IN" - the print below did not come out at all but probably just says JAPAN - that's what I see anyway

idcloisonne, yes, the main figures are one aspect and the moriage is a separate aspect, it seems the figures were glazed and then the moriage was applied, is this then a very common item? does that mean it is also not Satsuma? I read that items with western letters were possible fakes, is that true? Either way, its very detailed and will sit prominently on my shelf.

Excellent answer idcloisonne, thank you very much. Now I have some answers when people ask me when they see it, I may sound like I know what I'm talking about.
