I had been looking at this piece at Volunteer's of America for a few days. I was trying to figure out whether it was a real watercolor or not and what kind of paper it was painted on. So I kept hiding it behind other pictures until today. It was right were I left it so home it came. It looks like it's been opened and taped back up at some point. You can tell it's a piece of very thin paper that is just laying on top the background, which I believe is raw silk. I really don't want to open it again so I'll leave it be. There's a seal and some Chinese characters in the upper left hand corner. I have no clue if it's the artist signature seal or just the title. I do know it's not a print. It looks like watercolor and ink to me. Is it valuable? Probably not, but I do love it.

Is it a bamboo frame? Don't change frame! It's so right.
Thank you Elisabethan :)... yes it's a gold bamboo style frame but not actual bamboo. I'd never change it. I agree it suits it perfectly.
Thanks id.... Don't know why I didn't consider it being Japanese. I'm still not sure about what it's painted on though. It could be rice (pith paper). The background seems to have square blocks of pale metallic color making up the sheet which is laying on top of the white mat and that does look like silk. It has a rough texture so I think it's raw silk. It's pretty that's for sure. -Mike-
Oh yes it's under glass id ...... the back has wide masking tape around the back so I think it was opened up at one time and then sealed with the tape. It looks like the painting is just laying on the cloth background. If you look close at the bottom edges you can see some nicks in the paper. I'm really resisting the urge to open it and check it for fear of how delicate it might be.
Thanks for the link id... they sure do look like the ones in the pictures. I'm really glad this picture was still there after three days of indecision before buying it. I do that all the time and it drives me crazy. I kept thinking you should buy things right away. Why do I torture myself....lol. It wasn't extremely expensive but a lot more than I usually pay for things. Loving it is the first step anything else is icing on the cake.
Thanks id :).... I value your opinion. It's always nice when someone agrees with you. It proves that I'm learning something and how to look at things with a critical eye. I am so tempted to open it up to see what else might be hidden on the back. I've found dates, dedications, signatures, and other important information in the past.
Don't really know anyone I could take it too. Guess I could post it on the Asian Art forum I just hate their day lag when posting something. I bet someone on there could translate the chop mark and the characters. Provided someone would actually look at it reply. I know geo26e occasionally offers translations of marks for me. Maybe I could ask him if he knows what any of it says.
The Asian art forum was the first to ID my bowl. I believe his name was Bill Harwood . He seems to be the resident expert. Then the clincher was sending pictures to Lark Mason. The Asian art expert from "Antique Roadshow". It's on his auction site at present. I could send pictures to him of the watercolor for appraisal. I just hate to pester but if you're considering consigning it they will do it.
