This is made out of some tropical hardwood - i think it's called 'laurel' in Central America, but not the same as our 'laurel' here in california. it's very dense and heavy. i'm going to weatherproof this and paint it some interesting colors and hopefully it will be better. it didn't cost much, so i'm not too worried about ruining it. how do people feel about modifying things like this? [personally, i love modifying pieces which i believe need improving on]

In my humble opinion, I would suggest learning more about it before you modify it. It looks Toltec to me, but I think more investigation is warranted. Are there any markings on the base. Maybe something that looks like a plug. Sometimes these are museum pieces, as I have a Buddha bust, which came from a San Francisco museum, and is an authentic replica issue by the museum. Anyway some food for thought. Best of luck, and nice find. Kirk

I could give an opinion on altering this but you sure wouldn't appreciate it.

thanks walksoftly, Artistinside and flhrjr2! this is no valuable museum piece - i'm certain of it. it might be Mexican, or Philipino, or Indonesian, but nothing old or important. but it does have some charm as a garden focalpoint, in my opinion. but what detracts from that is first: the colors/patina it currently has - just not interesting to me. The piece is large - standing almost 5 ft tall.

Well, it sure is impressive :) I'm with the others as long as you are sure it's not valuable.

In mu opinion I am a wood collector and never paint or cover carved wood as it is an antique and you will ruin the value of it.If you just plan to keep it and use it someway its up to you,but it will ruin the value of the carved bowl you have.

Dear ho2cultcha, I agree with Jedman1. I mentioned months ago, that you should not rush to judgement. Often primitive pieces are mistaken for junk. I hope you have not painted it, but if so, enjoy... Regards, Kirk

oops! too late. you are both probably right Jedman1 and Artistinside, but i really wanted a different look to it. i've painted it about 5 times now, and still haven't gotten it right. will post a photo when i do!
