This lamp is what in France is called “une veilleuse”, a nightlight: a small light fixture placed for comfort or convenience in dark areas or areas that may become dark at certain times. This justifies the use of orange thick pâte-de-verre as this lamp was never intended as a bedside-table light the way we use them nowadays to read in bed –or doing crossword puzzles or whatever one does in bed before definitely turning the light off and sleep… but for giving convenient or ambient lighting in a room.

The body is made in forged iron, mixing an Art Deco motive (that of the pagoda and the stylized branches) with the more realist one of the leaves. The shade is made of cameo glass andbears the Daum signature. If you google for “Veilleuse Daum” you can find some design with either a similar shade or a similar metalwork.

It stand about 30 cm tall.

I must made a correction here. I first wrote cameo glass... noooope, I was wrong. It's pâte-de-verre!!!

This lamp has a lovely story: it was bought in Rome, at a jewelery that was especilazed in Art Deco jewels, and this was part of the decoration in the shop. Carlos had been seeing it for at least ten years and had always loved it, so one day he asked for it, of course it was not for sale, but he kept on trying, not only this day but many others later. At last the couple who runned the shop agreed to selling him the lamp. They told him they had bought it many years ago in Paris "when this stuff costed almost nothing".

I am so glad Carlos insisted so much in buying it!!!

Austro this is the most wonderful light I have seen - the ironwork, the glass - everything works together to make it so magnificent.
So different to your other lamps but how could you not love it!

It gives an old world feeling. I believe that's what antique items are meant to do. I love that it shows such artistry. Beautiful and functional!!

Thanks for your love Tom, Smiata, Fledermaus, Violet, Mani and Inky!!!

And thanks Smiata for the comment! That artistry is something I love from it too. Our modern lamps are beautiful, and they show great design skills -especially since they were designed in a time when there were no computers, let's not forget about it!- but in lamps such us this one one can see not only a good design but also some kraftmanship.

I compare it to a huge piece of jewelery made in iron and glass instead of gold and pecious stones.

I love ironwork even more than glass on this one, beautiful piece!
    13. austrohungaro austrohungaro, 10 years ago
Thanks MacArt... Actually, you're totally right! The ironwork here is excellent, the pâte de verre screen is just that, a simple pâte de verre screen :) (even if it's Daum)
