This object was from a prof. Of language at Univ. of Toyoko who collected Asian antiquities. It' s made of metal, likely iron, about 12" tall. It has ring handles and bands of raised designs around the mid-section and neck. It looks like a vase but when turned over, as seen in the second photo, there is no bottom. About 1" up from the base there is what appears to be a place where it was once attached to something else. What remains looks to be wood. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in figuring out what this might be, it's country of origin and age.

Thanks Jim. I checked with a magnet and it is bronze. I have added two row photos; hope these are what you Ned. In looking at it head on I don't really see a figure in the design but I may be missing something. It does appear to be symmetrical on both bands without an apparent front or back. The sides with the ring handles are the same but different Thant the front/ back.

Thanks Jim. I think you are definitely right about the Taotie motif. The drawings and photos look just like the jug. And it's shape sure looks like the classic hu right down to the ring handles. The bottom ( or lack thereof) is a puzzle that I will continue to research. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your guidance and help in figuring out what it is.

what the hell is this it , is likely a wine vessel probably a wine container which one an Lei or HU container ,probably an HU at least its promising , because of the taotie and and a sort of Leiwen thunder pattern but it is not squared and where is the kui dragon motive, this has to go to an expert ,
